The College Prep Program at the Los Angeles College of Music was designed to provide an in-depth introduction to college-level music theory, production and entrepreneurship coursework. Students prepare for freshman year proficiency testing, portfolio submissions and enter college with a better understanding of music as an enterprise.

Ear Training & Theory

Prepare for success in one of the most challenging classes for first-year music students. Improve your knowledge and begin freshman year with confidence in music theory and ear training.

This course is designed to build the foundation for students to advance to the skill level expected of a working music professional. This class consists of video lectures, knowledge checks, practice materials, and online tests. Topics covered include: pitch, register, key signatures, the circle of fifths, melodic/rhythmic/interval dictation, and more.

This course is a continuation of Level 1 and consists of video lectures, knowledge checks, practice materials, and online tests. In addition to building on the topics in Level 1, concepts such as triads, chord construction and recognition, voice leading, figured bass, transposition, writing and analyzing chord progressions – and more – are introduced.

This course is a continuation of Level 2 and consists of video lectures, knowledge checks, practice materials, and online tests. In addition to building on the topics in Levels 1 & 2, concepts such as 7thchord construction and inversions, tonal centers, open vs. closed voicing, song analysis – and more – are introduced.

Music Industry Studies

Learn to view music through a professional lens, develop an understanding of the modern music industry and comprehend how success is attained in this 2 level course.

This course provides a thorough overview of the evolution of the recorded music industry. It will cover the major events and breakthroughs that started the industry and have continued to evolve it for the past 80+ years. The course consists of several video lectures, supplemental lecture materials, quizzes, tests, and song analyses. Topics covered include: a history of recorded music, the artist’s team, the evolution of the major record labels, music industry revenue streams, and more.

This course delves into the following topics: copyright, publishing, booking gigs, tour management, marketing, building your fan base, artist management, and more. It consists of several video lectures, supplemental lecture materials, quizzes, tests, and song analyses.

Pro Tools 100

Bring your music to life with the professional-standard digital audio workstation, Pro Tools. Students who complete the program enter collegiate Pro Tools courses with skill and familiarity.

This course begins building the foundation needed to record using an Avid Pro Tools system. This online version of Pro Tools 100 covers the AVID curriculum offered at LACM’s facility as well as AVID training centers. The course consists of video walkthroughs and lectures, knowledge checks, exercises and assignments. Topics include: Pro Tools history, hardware, setting up Pro Tools, introduction to the edit window and functions, creating your first session, and more.

This course continues building upon the foundation started in Level 1 and consists of video walkthroughs and lectures, knowledge checks, exercises and assignments. Topics include: importing and working with media in a session, MIDI, virtual instruments, navigating in Pro Tools, and more.

This course continues building upon the foundation started in Levels 1 & 2 and consists of video walkthroughs and lectures, knowledge checks, exercises and assignments. Topics include: editing techniques, mixing techniques, and completing your session.
