LACM College Prep Program

Enrollment in the LACM Online College Prep Program provides aspiring music professionals in high school with access to college-level courses instructed by Award Winning Department Heads and Faculty that are currently working in the Los Angeles music industry. Our programs help students enhance their skills in musicianship, music theory and prepare students for professional certifications in Pro Tools. College Prep Program students take advantage of an enhanced education by applying their skills to college auditions, theory proficiency testing, and improved technique in their high school performance ensembles. Upon program completion, students attending LACM for college may have the opportunity to test-out of some first-year courses.

LACM College Prep Courses are offered online & in person. Study from the comfort of your own home or take advantage of our facilities. On site classes are held Thursday nights for one to two hours.

Ear Training & TheoryLevel I, II & III

Level I | The Basics

This course is designed to build the foundation for students to advance to the skill level expected of a working music professional. This class consists of video lectures, knowledge checks, practice materials, and online tests. Topics covered include: pitch, register, key signatures, the circle of fifths, melodic/rhythmic/interval dictation, and more.

Level II | Building on the Basics

This course is a continuation of Level 1 and consists of video lectures, knowledge checks, practice materials, and online tests. In addition to building on the topics in Level 1, concepts such as triads, chord construction and recognition, voice leading, figured bass, transposition, writing and analyzing chord progressions – and more – are introduced.

Level III | Beyond the Basics

This course is a continuation of Level 2 and consists of video lectures, knowledge checks, practice materials, and online tests. In addition to building on the topics in Levels 1 & 2, concepts such as 7th chord construction and inversions, tonal centers, open vs. closed voicing, song analysis – and more – are introduced.

Music Industry StudiesLevel I & II

Level I | Evolution of the Music Biz

This course provides a thorough overview of the evolution of the recorded music industry. It will cover the major events and breakthroughs that started the industry and have continued to evolve it for the past 80+ years. The course consists of several video lectures, supplemental lecture materials, quizzes, tests, song analyses, and an industry profile paper. Topics covered include: a history of recorded music, the artist’s team, the evolution of the major record labels, music industry revenue streams, and more.

Level II | Succeeding as an Artist

This course delves into the following topics: copyright, publishing, booking gigs, tour management, marketing, building your fan base, artist management, and more. It consists of several video lectures, supplemental lecture materials, quizzes, tests, song analyses, and an industry players instructional presentation.

Pro Tools 100Level I, II & III

Level I | Getting Started

This course begins building the foundation needed to record using an Avid Pro Tools system. This online version of Pro Tools 100 covers the AVID curriculum offered at LACM’s facility as well as AVID training centers. The course consists of video walkthroughs and lectures, knowledge checks, exercises and assignments. Topics include: Pro Tools history, hardware, setting up Pro Tools, introduction to the edit window and functions, creating your first session, and more.

Level II | Getting Virtual

This course continues building upon the foundation started in Level 1 and consists of video walkthroughs and lectures, knowledge checks, exercises and assignments. Topics include: importing and working with media in a session, MIDI, virtual instruments, navigating in Pro Tools, and more.

Level III | Editing, Mixing & Finishing Up

This course continues building upon the foundation started in Levels 1 & 2 and consists of video walkthroughs and lectures, knowledge checks, exercises and assignments. Topics include: editing techniques, mixing techniques, finishing up your session, and putting together a final project.
